One of the most famous spots in Crete, Spinalonga is sometimes called the ‘island of tears’ due to its past as a leper colony. Between 1903 and 1957, it was home to hundreds of Greece’s lepers, who were shipped here and then forbidden to leave. On this trip, you’ll ride a boat to the island from the fishing harbour in Elounda. Once on Spinalonga, you’ll take a guided walk around the remains of the colony, which was established within the walls of a huge Venetian fortress. See its main street, still lined with the shops and houses where the lepers attempted to live ordinary lives. And look round the old hospital and graveyard. Later, you’ll sail across Mirabello Bay to Elounda. Swim in the sea, stretch out in the sunshine or watch the world go by at a waterside café. You'll also have lunch in a local tavern. A fascinating if poignant day.

This trip will take you island hopping. From Corfu, you’ll sail over to Antipaxos. With a population of just 60, there are more vine trees on this island than people. And its white sand beaches have earned it the nickname of the Caribbean of the Greek Islands. You’ll pull up at one of these beaches for a spot of sunbathing or swimming. Your next stop will be Antipaxos’ bigger sister, Paxos. According to legend, Poseidon created this island by striking Corfu with his trident, so he and his wife could have some peace and quiet. Centuries later, peace and quiet is still what you get here – even in Gaios, which is one of the island’s livelier towns. There’ll be time here to have lunch. The tavernas and restaurants are concentrated around the main square. After you’ve eaten, you’ll also have time for a bit of souvenir shopping in the few jewellery and gift shops near the harbour.

If there’s one must-see in Crete, it’s the Palace of Knossos. Just south of Heraklion, it’s the island’s most popular attraction. And for good reason - it’s absolutely fascinating. Dating back to 1900 BC, it was the hub of Crete’s Minoan civilisation and where the fearsome Minotaur was said to have lurked in a labyrinth. Your guide will explain the myths surrounding the palace and its kings as they lead you round its treasures, including its throne room, royal apartments and frescoes. With your explorations over here, it’s then on to Heraklion, Crete’s capital. See the Venetian lion fountain and the loggia that is now the town hall before finishing up at the entrance to the old harbour. Then the time’s your own to explore how you want, perhaps shopping at the market, walking round the harbour walls or visiting the 16th century Venetian fortress. A great day of discovery for history and culture buffs.

Our unique excursion to Thirassia Island starts from the port of Ammoudi, close to Oia in the north of the island.
After picking you up from your hotel we bring you to Ammoudi. Then, by a tenderboat, our groups will be brought to Thirassia, to the port of Korfos, which is inside the Caldera. From this point, we start our climb over about 180 steps to Manolas. Everyone is able to climb there but if you want, you have also got the opportunity to ride a donkey with a shlight extra charge. The spectacular view will make it up to you for all the effort!

Our next stop is at the taverna “Panorama”, where you can get rest and refresh. Your guide will explain to you everything there is to know about the genesis and history of Thirassia Island. SantoriniExperts have all the local expertise and will help you gain all the information needed about the local agricultural specialties, wine production and of course the Greek traditions.

The short stop will be followed by a stroll through the traditional village of Manolas. An abandoned cave house, the center of the village and the school are some highlights on our way. Then our way brings us into the untouched nature of Thirassia Island. During our hiking tour we will pass through a garden with vegetables, a vine yard and we will find different herbs until we get to Akrilia. Akrillia is an abandoned village full of cave houses, which was once the biggest settlement on this island. In the center, we can find and visit the Virgin Mary Church where we share with you interesting information about the Greek religion. From here we will be brought to the new port of the island. There in a traditional tavern right next to the sea we will enjoy our Greek lunch accompanied by a nice glas of local wine.

Our day trip to Thirassia is completed. The tenderboat takes us back to Ammoudi from where we will start our return back to the hotel.
