From our meeting point we make our way to the World Heritage Ginkaku-ji Temple, originally founded by Yoshimasa Ashikaga as a mountain cottage. Also known as the Silver Pavilion, it is a Zen temple located along Kyoto’s eastern mountains with gardens that are bound to leave an impression. It boasts a unique dry sand garden and moss garden amongst others with vivid colours that come alive depending on the season.
Next we walk along the Philosopher’s Path, a one mile stone footpath along the canal lined with cherry and maple trees that make it a delight to walk along during spring and autumn.
We take a break to learn and observe a traditional tea ceremony before we take a stroll around the Gion district – Kyoto’s most traditional entertainment district. Developed as a major hanamachi, if you’re lucky, you may spot maiko girls and geiko women in an area that retains the refinement and elegant atmosphere of times gone by.
